Big Island, Hawaii

waipio, Hawaii, USA

Today we release a new island in the Hawaiian archipelago: the Big Island. It is home to Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano that towers over the Hawaiian Islands. It is also one of the world’s best sites for astronomy; 13 telescopes representing nine countries cluster at its summit. The Big Island’s Ka Lae is the southernmost point in the United States, and Parker Ranch is one of the largest privately owned ranches in America. Hilo is the country’s rainiest city. The lush tropical forests, the expansive lava flow deserts, the sun-drenched beaches and the towering mountains make the Big Island a real paradise for nature lovers.

Both East and West Hawai‘i Island provide good bases for touring. Hilo is well situated for excursions to the Hamakua Coast, Mauna Kea, the Puna district, and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park – a highlight on any visitor’s itinerary, with Kilauea Caldera and its active lava rifts. From Kailua-Kona on the island’s west side, there is access to the South Kohala resorts to the north, the Parker Ranch country of Waimea, Kona coffee country to the south, and many well-preserved ancient sites, including Pu‘uhonua O Honaunau. Pololu and Waipio wild valleys on the north shore offer the most dramatic landscapes and hiking opportunities. Discover and enjoy these and many more destinations in our app.

Today we introduce a new destination in TravelEchoes: Oahu. This is the first of the Hawaiian Islands we’ll be adding in the next weeks. Outside Waikiki you can find less crowded surroundings and enjoy the great natural beauty of this gem in the Pacific. Natural beauty can be found in the two mountain ranges, the Koolau and Waianae ranges. Some great hikes are just a short drive into the mountains from Waikiki. Secluded white sand beaches, picturesque beach towns, and pounding winter surf on the North Shore are some of the highlights.  The Polynesian Cultural Center and Pearl Harbour with its different memorials are a must to understand the history of the island. Oahu has more than a hundred beaches. Kailua Beach Park, Kualoa Regional Park, Kahana Bay Beach Park, Lanikai Beach, Sunset Beach or Ehukai Beach Park  are some of the most interesting ones.

Diamond Head State Park – the crater of an ancient volcano – offers amazing views over Waikiki. Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is an amazing place to enjoy nature. Nu’uanu Pali Lookout offers some of the most amazing views in the island, apart from the hiking trails. Hale’iwa Historical town is a 100-year-old historic town with many historical buildings.
